The identifiable and protectable types of intellectual property resulting from UL's research work include the following:
Patent - an exclusive right granted by the state for an invention to qualify for patent protection, it must be novel, have an inventive step and be industrially applicable.
Know-how - a body of practical information that is not generally known or readily available, is described in sufficient detail and is important and useful for direct or indirect use.
Plant Variety - a collection of crops that rank last within a botanical taxon (botanical taxonomy), regardless of whether the requirements for granting a breeder's right are fully met. It can be defined as a characteristic manifestation of a genotype or combination of genotypes, forming a group distinct from any other in at least one distinctive feature. A breed is considered a unit that remains unchanged during reproduction.
Trademark - a sign capable to distinguishing the goods or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprise.
Design - the appearance of the whole or a part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture and/or materials of the product itself and/or its ornamentation.
UL has adopted regulations that govern the management of intellectual property rights. These regulations define, in more detail, the procedures for identifying, evaluating, registering, and preserving intellectual property.
